she's not a model and he looks good
How do you describe someone who cannot be ‘reduced’ to descriptive adjectives?
My series ‘she’s not a model and he looks good’ was conceived in response to the artist Martine Gutierrez. 30-year-old multi-media artist Gutierrez poses questions that sit at the intersection of gender roles, sexuality and identity and that she does not answer. In often provocative self-portraits in the form of photos, she documents her personal transformation into various imaginary roles, which enable her to take a look at society.
Her work and the questions raised by it touched me so deeply that I wanted to create something similar and to understand Gutierrez‘s questions through my own experience. This led me to the creation of self-portraits, that focus on the boundaries of expressions of gender other than just the male (my own.) I used lighting contrary to my usual choice: soft lighting with strong expression, and harsher lighting with soft expression.
